There is a particular kind of mistake we see often, and it rarely has anything to do with quality.
A gentleman buys the briefcase everyone recommends, only to find it too rigid for the trips that make up half his year. A woman is gifted a beautiful evening handbag and reaches for it perhaps four times before the strap is returned to its dust bag for good. The leather is never the problem. The choice of which leather, for which life, is where things tend to go astray.

The difference has very little to do with price, and a great deal to do with a question we think is worth asking before any other: what will this piece actually be asked to do?
The handbag Is a Tool Before It Is a Statement
It is tempting to choose leather the way one chooses art — by instinct, by how a piece looks under gallery light. But a bag is handled daily, in weather, in haste, in the particular way its owner moves through a day. The most elegant piece in the world is the wrong one if it cannot keep pace with the life it is meant to accompany.
Consider three entirely different Tuesdays.
The first belongs to someone who spends her mornings between meetings and her evenings catching a flight. Her handbag needs structure that holds its shape after the fourth time it is set on a taxi floor, and leather substantial enough to survive an overhead bin without complaint. This is not a piece chosen for how it photographs. It is chosen for how it performs at 6 a.m. on a Thursday, which is a rather different test.
The second Tuesday belongs to someone whose day moves from the school run to a client lunch to, if the evening allows, dinner somewhere that matters. Here, versatility is the entire brief — a piece equally at ease held under an arm at 9 a.m. and set beside a table at 9 p.m., in a leather with enough presence to not need explaining.
The third is a boardroom day, and boardrooms are unforgiving. A briefcase here does a portion of the talking before its owner says a word. Full-grain leather, cut with restraint, holding its structure through a decade of use rather than a season of it — this is not vanity. It is simply what the room expects.
None of these women or men are wrong about what they want. They are only, occasionally, choosing the wrong piece to get it.
On Patina
There is a reason we built an entire service around the aging of leather rather than the prevention of it. Vegetable-tanned hides are meant to deepen — to take on the particular character of the hands that have carried them, the sun they have sat in, the years they have witnessed. A briefcase ten years into its life, carried well, tends to look better than it did new. This is not true of most things we own. It is, we think, one of the more quietly remarkable qualities of good leather, and one worth choosing for rather than around.
The finish someone gravitates toward, in other words, says almost as much about how they will live with a piece as the size of the handbag itself. Some prefer leather that is meant to be undisturbed by time. Others want a piece that will visibly become theirs. Both are entirely reasonable positions, and both call for a different hide.
